I shouldn’t even be bringing this to your attention but…
Today is not Sunday, which is the day my newsletters normally go out. What had happened was…my husband went on a business trip for the weekend to a nearby island (I know, the tough life). He called the day after he left and told us he missed me and the kids and wanted us to come join him…THAT DAY! It was 10am and we had to get on the 2pm ferry. My like-to-plan-ahead brain said “Impossible”.
Plus, I had plans of decluttering, laundry, grocery shopping and getting the kids back on a good sleeping schedule. Did I mention school was starting on Tuesday? I literally felt like I was choosing between an easy, breezy, organized start to the school year and complete and utter chaos. But then I remembered my word of 2024: CONNECTION.
I want to not only spend more time with the people I love, I want to be obscenely present with them and get to know who they are today on a deeply personal level. So, even though every planning bone in my body wanted to say no, I said YES to an adventure.
The four of us spent three magical days in The British Virgin Islands (pics below) mostly outside, trying new foods and having discussions about what we want this year. I learned so much about the people I live with everyday which is a reminder to not take those closest to us for granted. I learned that my son, who wanted to be a boat captain last year, now is thinking of being a pilot. My daughter, who was obsessed with dance in 2023, now only speaks about gymnastics. Time for honest conversations are so important.
As humans, we are constantly growing and checking in regularly is a great way to support and encourage who that person is today making them feel seen, understood and appreciated. I want my kids to know they can talk to me about anything no matter how cringey it might feel and that I’m going to love who they are through every stage of life.
So, while I started this year without a business strategy, no fruit for the kids’ lunches and a laundry room filled with dirty clothes, I was more than okay with it. I don’t have it altogether right now and maybe I never will but my cup is so full for having that magical time with my family. I might be a bit of a hot mess right now but I’m a happy one!
Let me know in the comments one thing you’ve said YES to this year already that makes you happy even if it doesn’t fit neatly into your schedule.
Also, if you’re looking for a place to have more honest conversation and sharing, come join The Well this Sunday, January 14th at 7pm EST. Our first virtual journaling session will be on the topic of “Do It Scared” which is on page 28 of the Wellthy Mama Guided Self-Love Journal. Hope to see you there!
